One thing I like about stopping in smaller towns is the anticipation of finding a good restaurant. Last year, we stopped in Holbrooke, AZ. Asked around and found an Italian restaurant that from the outward appearances, you'd never stop. The food & service was outstanding! Learned that it was owned by an Native Indian who decided he wanted to learn to be an Italian chef so he brought in a chef from New York for several months to teach him the trade. He's been in business for decades now.
Experienced the same kind of thing last night in Texarkana, TX... Little place by the name of Italian Cafe. You don't always need to be in the big cities to find good dining! Of course, this county in Texas is dry, but walked across the state line into Texarkana, AR and bought a good bottle of wine and bingo, a nice dining experience.
